   singer
   Born in Paris, Yvette Guilbert, with her exotic silhouette, palid expression, long red hair, and in a green gown with long black gloves, was especially immortalized by henri de TOULOusE-LAUTREC.At first performing in cabarets her spicy and earthy songs ("Le Fiacre"; "Madame Arthur"), she became, in the course of numerous interviews and tours, the ambassador of popular French song, from the sad ballads of the Middle Ages to the compositions of PIERRE-JEAN DE BÉRANGER and GUSTAVE NADAUD. Her incisive diction, wit, and spirit made these interpretations marvelous to hear. Guilbert published her memoirs (La Chanson de ma vie) in 1929.
